CAMARILLO, California, Jan 27, 2024 - In response to the recent devastating fires that have impacted families across Ventura and Los Angeles Counties, kidSTREAM Children’s Museum and best-selling author Peter H. Reynolds have partnered with the American Red Cross to support affected families. Together, they are distributing 500 STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math) kits to children and families in need.
Each kit is designed to inspire creativity, critical thinking, and a sense of discovery through hands-on activities. Included is the beloved book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, generously donated by Candlewick Press, along with other educational materials provided by kidSTREAM’s partners. The kits will be assembled by volunteers in partnership with local companies and organizations, reflecting a true community effort to support families in need. The American Red Cross also contributed $3,750 toward the purchase of kit materials, making this initiative possible.
“Play is essential in helping children navigate toxic stress, and children’s museums have a unique role to play in supporting communities during times of crisis,” said Michael Shanklin, Executive Director of kidSTREAM. “By offering resources, sharing information, and helping families build resilience, we can help children cope with trauma and find moments of joy and discovery even in the most challenging circumstances. We are deeply honored to partner with the Red Cross and our local supporters to provide these kits as a small source of hope and comfort to families in need.”
This initiative underscores the power of community collaboration in addressing critical needs during emergencies. By leveraging its expertise in child-centered learning, kidSTREAM demonstrates how children’s museums can be vital community resources, helping families not only recover but also build a foundation for future resilience.
